Steve Burrows is an award-winning filmmaker and comedian who has been entertaining audiences in film, television, commercials and theater for over two decades. He has appeared on some of the most successful shows of all time (Seinfeld, America’s Funniest Videos, Wheel of Fortune, The Super Bowl), written and directed for the most prestigious film companies in show business (HBO, Miramax, 20th Century Fox, Disney), and written, directed and performed in over 300 commercials on five continents for many of the most influential businesses in modern history (Apple, Budweiser, Miller Lite, Texaco, McDonald’s). All in the name of laugh-out-loud humor.

All that changed in 2009 when Steve’s Mom, Judie – an active retired schoolteacher – fell while riding her bike and broke her hip. Steve’s Mom went in for a routine partial hip replacement and came out in a coma with permanent brain damage. When she finally awoke, her body was riddled with irreversible cognitive and physical disabilities that would cost her everything – her home, her independence and her entire 50-year life savings – paying for the injuries inflicted upon her by a cascade of preventable medical errors.

After Steve’s Uncle, a physician, told him the doctors and hospital had falsified the medical records in surgery, Steve dropped out of show business and spent the next ten years taking care of his Mom, while fighting like a pit bull to get her justice in the American court system. In relentless pursuit of the truth, Steve tried any means necessary to find out what the hell really happened to his Mom, including going undercover with a spy camera.

Steve’s deep dark dive into the medical industrial complex has now become the critically acclaimed new HBO documentary film Bleed Out, where Steve discovered that medical error is the third leading cause of death in America. 500 patients die each day due to medical mistakes. One in four patients are harmed. This is an epidemic that affects every single one of us and our loved ones. And no one knows about it.

Part medical mystery/legal thriller, part war story/love story, Steve’s harrowing, riveting cautionary tale is also an empowering, rousing call-to-action – where comedy meets tragedy head-on, where the personal is the universal, and where Steve’s 20+ years in show business – juxtaposed against a decade of lessons learned in the great siege of American health care – is literally saving lives.
